In a few short weeks, we will reach our third anniversary aboard Papillon. Not bad for a trip that was only supposed to be two years long. And although I've baked enough cakes lately to last me until the end of time, I come from a birthday/anniversary/Groundhog Day-celebrating tribe. What to do to mark the occasion?
Lightbulb! What better way to say: Happy Anniversary Papillon! than to make you do all the heavy lifting? So I am opening up a Q&A. What is it you want to know, dear reader? Are you curious about cruising? How to get started? What you need to know? What you will figure out later? How to deal with hearing impairment? Vision impairment? Seasickness-related mental impairment? What bad advice have we ignored to our advantage? What dumb things will we never do again? Are there really pirates out there?

Thank you for opening the floor for questions to us wannabe's.
In researching for my (long time away) future cruise life, I have two main fears that cause me to rethink getting my feet wet (weather and things that bite). Since you have the experience and tend to not pull any punches when writing could you answer the following for me?
1.} How often do you encounter rough weather to the point that you want to kiss Terra Firma ASAP? I'm talking major boat rocking and high waves here. Have you ever feared you were going to heel too far over and not come back upright?
2.} Do you ever have to go overboard in the open ocean (to clear a prop, etc)? If so, what marine life have you encountered?
3.) How often do you see sharks? Are they usually close to shore or in the open ocean?
4.) What is a better boat name, Velleity's Twilight or Circumbendibus?

I'm also interested in how you survived very heavy weather. Did you heave to with a sea anchor? Run before with warps/drogue and storm sails or bare poles? Or lie ahull and hope for the best?
Have you had any major gear failures, and how did you fix/jury rig it?
